December 1776
After a series of American
defeats, George Washington took 2,400 men across the Delaware River on Christmas
Day and conducted a surprise raid on the British  and their hired mercenary army at Trenton, New Jersey.
They were cold, hungry and their clothes were worn out. They crossed in freezing weather in Durham boats.
That was only one of the amazing things our forefathers did to overcome tyranny from British domination in 1776.  Congress appointed a committee to draft the Declaration of Independence in that year.
